Description

Many institutions regard risk management as a static practice designed primarily to prevent legal liability. However, the field of SLCE offers a more expansive understanding of “risk”—one that acknowledges the material, emotional, and cognitive harms that can occur to students and community members during community engagement. What cultures, practices, and strategies support community-engaged professionals, students, and partners to navigate—and even, embrace—risk? After offering various scholarly and anti-racist frameworks for understanding risk, we will ask participants to map the real and perceived, implicit and explicit risks they confront in their work and propose anti-racist (not merely bureaucratic) solutions. Participants will reflect on the discomfort of considering risk to practice holding those tensions while moving towards solutions.
