Description

Colleges and universities frequently emphasize their role in shaping citizens. Is their role only to shape future generations of student leaders, or do institutions have a role as civic actors in their own right? We will examine this question through the lens of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment, arguing that institutions should play an active role in promoting youth voting and to actively defend against threats to the youth franchise. Through four case studies representing "institution as citizen," we will examine the role that institutions should play in realizing the democratic promise of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment and identify key actions that institutions can and should consider.
