Description

A promising practice for improving student outcomes in general education mathematics is integrating community engagement and data science. Data Literacy and Visualization is a course for non-STEM students in which they learn to analyze and communicate data that answers non-profit community partner questions. This novel course has the highest passing rate of any general education math course at our university and improves student attitudes about mathematics, along with ensuring students master critical 21st-century workforce skills. In this presentation, we will describe the course, how it leverages the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center and Service Learning Academy to engage community, and what student outcomes have been from the six semesters the course has been run.
