In order to set the tone for civic and community engagement early in students’ college careers, we integrated a service-learning experience into every overnight orientation session. In this knowledge-to-action workshop, we will share how we worked with community partners to identify their immediate needs, engaged the students in learning about those needs, had them complete an activity that related directly to that community need, and then finally asked them to reflect on their experience. We will share data—both quantitative and qualitative—that demonstrate the benefit of this student experience. We will then replicate this service-learning activity for the session participants. Partnering with a local Denver community organization, we will learn, do, and reflect in our own service activity.
