Description

Well over 500,000 college athletes compete in the U.S. every year. How can we maximize the civic impact that college athletic teams are making, provide meaningful professional learning opportunities for student-athlete leaders, and do so in a way that is sustainable for a diverse array of community organizations? This session will overview a multi-faceted approach to preparing student-athletes to be community leaders and grow in their civic problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills. The key takeaways of our session include examples of (1) frameworks for a student-athlete civic leadership program, (2) tangible designs for cultivating civic life in athletics, (3) evaluation framework and assessment approaches, and strategies for providing a variety of pathways for student-athlete engagement.
