Learn how one HBCU community college in rural Mississippi incorporated service-learning as a cross-curricular program at the institution with students in both academic courses and career-technical programs engaging in community-centered projects. The session will explore the ways we built institutional support and funding for the project, as well as early results from our pilots in English, history, radio/television production, agriculture, business office technology and cosmetology courses. We will also discuss the development of a faculty professional development Summer Institute leveraging the unique background of HBCU community work. We especially invite faculty from smaller institutions and community colleges to join us in imagining service-learning from our unique frameworks.
|Learning outcomes:
- Participants will learn how to successfully start a service-learning project at a small institution.
- Participants will learn how career-technical programs can participate in service-learning projects.
- Participants will learn how the community focus of HBCUs uniquely situates us to engage in service-learning work.
