November 16-17, 2023
Showcase will begin at 9:00 AM on 11/16 and end at 5:00 PM on 11/17
Netter Center for Community Partnerships
Philadelphia, PA
Join the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania and University-Assisted Community School (UACS) partners in West Philadelphia to see first-hand how mobilizing the resources of the University of Pennsylvania is used to help traditional public schools become and function as innovative University-Assisted Community Schools. This showcase is hosted by Penn’s Netter Center (including staff, faculty members, and student leaders) with UACS partners (including teachers, principals, school students, and community members) in West Philadelphia. The two-day event will include activities occurring both on campus and at one or two of the K-12 UACS sites.
The Netter Center has more than thirty years of experience developing and adapting the UACS model and they want to share their knowledge and experience with you. The Netter Center also convenes a national University-Assisted Community Schools Network of approximately 70 higher education institutions that aims to build a professional learning community to share resources and best practices and to advance UACS policy and practice.
UACS programs are connected to the core mission of the University of Pennsylvania through Academically Based Community Service (ABCS) and other forms of community-engaged scholarship, in which service is integrated with research, teaching, and learning. Each academic year, at least 80 ABCS courses, in a wide range of disciplines, enroll approximately 1800 Penn undergraduate and graduate students. The Netter Center views ABCS and UACS as core to a comprehensive democratic anchor institution strategy, one that engages the full range of university resources—academic, volunteer, economic, cultural, etc.,— in democratic partnerships with the community.
Check out this article as an example of an ABCS course, “Everyday Neuroscience,” that works in partnership with Robeson High School, a university-assisted community school:
